History of our Tiger Dojo

Edinburgh Tiger Dojo Karate Club was founded in January 2006 by Sensei Miroslaw Pawlicki, 4th Dan. The first training sessions took place at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh.



In November 2007, two members of the club took part in the European Karate Championships in Kiev, Ukraine. M. Lendzian took part in the kata competition. Sensei Miroslaw Pawlicki participated in the open kumite competition-i.e. full contact fighting.



Also in 2007, Sensei Pawlicki left for Japan to enhance his skills, where he took part in a training seminar conducted by Kancho Royama and Shihan Hiroshige.



In 2008, Tiger Dojo training sessions were relocated to Hay School in Duddingston Park.

In the same year, three of our club participants passed the test for black belts, 1st Dan.
They were: Jacek Ziolkowski, M.Ledzian, S. Mackan.

In February 2009, Sensei Pawlicki and two members attended an international training camp in Fukushima, Japan.



In the autumn of 2009, the club moved to train at two new locations; Castleview Community Centre and the Jack Kane Community Centre.



In 2010, Senpai Jacek Ziolkowski and Senpai Klaudia Pokrzywnicka took part in the Open Karate Tournament in Vordingborg in Denmark.

Sensei Pawlicki also competed in this competition, where he was second in the kumite competition in the category of Open Master. He also participated in the tameshiwari (breaking boards by hand) smashing six boards by Seiken-fist technique, seven boards shuto-edge of hand technique and ten boards Hiji-elbow technique. A total of twenty-three boards using three techniques were broken. Jacek Ziolkowski took third place in the competition tameshiwari, breaking nineteen boards.



In 2010, the club gave karate demonstrations on Calton Hill and at the Craigmillar Festival in Edinburgh.



In 2011, Tiger Dojo fighters took part in the Scottish Open Karate Championships. Two of our fighters took part in the kumite competition (up to 80kg weight category) : Senpai Piotr Wilk won first place and Senpai Marek Pietrzykowski (in the category of heavyweight) won third place. Senpai Michal Kosman and Senpai Krzysztof Pazdrag also took part in these competitions.



In the same year, the Tiger Dojo fighters travelled to compete in the Karate Open Championships in Denmark, where Senpai Marek Pietrzykowski was placed fourth and Senpai Krzysztof Pazdrag in fifth.
Sensei Pawlicki took third place in the tameshiwari competition.


In 2012, Tiger Dojo fighters competed in the Open Championship in Scotland.
In the category of heavyweight, Senpai Marek Pietrzykowski was runner up and Senpai Jacek Ziolkowski took third place. Sensei Pawlicki gave a tameshiwari demonstration.



On Polish Day in April 2012, Sensei Pawlicki, Senpai Pietrzykowski and Senpai Wozny were invited to give a demonstration of Karate at Jewel & Esk College in Edinburgh.



On 5th May 2012, the Tiger Dojo organized the first International Karate Tournament (Full Contact) in Edinburgh, in memory of Mas Oyama.
In the heavyweight division at the tournament ,( kumite competition), Senpai Marek Pietrzykowski took first place and Senpai Jacek Ziolkowski runner up.
In the category of beginner (kumite), Senpai Pawell Ziolkowski, took second place and Senpai Wojciech Wozny, third place.
Many of the club members, including the youngsters, gave a karate demonstration and Sensei Mirek Pawlicki provided a tameshiwari exhibition.
The Consulates of Japan and Poland attended the Tournament, and took part in the presentation of awards.
Guests of honor were Shihan Klaus Rex (6th Dan), President of the European Organization IKO Matsushima and Shihan Roman Kucfir (5th Dan),Branch Chief of Kyokushin Karate UK.
On the next day a training seminar was held with training provided by Shihan Klaus Rex.



In June 2012 black belt exams were held in the Tiger Dojo.
Senapai Jacek Ziolkowski passed the exam for 2nd Dan and Senpai Michal Kosman passed to obtain the grade of 1st Dan.



In October 2012, Sensei Pawlicki and Senpai Ziolkowski took part in the International KarateTournament at the Karate Center in Roskilde, Denmark. Sensei Pawlicki gave a tameshiwari demonstration and was a judge for the competition.



In February 2013, Senpai Marek Pietrzykowski took part in the Scottish Open Karate Championships in Glasgow.

On 11th May 2013, the Tiger Dojo will host the second International Open Karate Tournament in memory of Mas Oyama  at PortobelloTown Hall, Edinburgh. Full details of this tournament can be found on our News page. We will publish a report on the tournament, on this website, soon after the event…
